The rising popularity of these services means that there are more and more rideshare vehicles on the roads of Erie and northwest Pennsylvania. Erie is a city in Pennsylvania, the county seat of Erie County, located on the southern shore of Lake Erie. Named for the Erie Nation of Native Americans who inhabited the area up until the mid-17th century, Erie is the fourth-largest city in Pennsylvania and the largest city in northwest Pennsylvania. After being annexed to Pennsylvania following the Revolutionary War, Erie served as a strategic naval port during the War of 1812, being the home port for the flagship of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry; this led to Erie being nicknamed the “Flagship City”. Initially a hub for the fishing, shipbuilding, and railroad industries, Erie later developed a significant manufacturing sector in the early 20th century, which declined somewhat during the latter half of the century. Although manufacturing remains an important part of Erie’s economy, the city has branched out into other industries, including healthcare, technology, and tourism, with millions of visitors to nearby Presque Isle State Park every summer.
If I am injured in an accident caused by a Lyft vehicle, can I sue the rideshare company? +
Potentially. In addition to the Lyft driver’s own insurance, Lyft offers an additional layer of insurance coverage for an accident caused by a Lyft vehicle, depending on the circumstances at the time of the accident. If the Lyft driver is not logged into the Lyft mobile application, Lyft offers no coverage and an injured party must look solely to the driver and his or her own insurance. If the Lyft driver is logged into the application but is not picking up or transporting a passenger, Lyft offers a basic level of coverage; if the driver is picking up or transporting a passenger at the time of the accident, Lyft offers up to $1 million in liability coverage.
What happens if another driver caused an accident with my Lyft vehicle? +
If another driver is responsible for causing an accident with your Lyft vehicle, then you are likely limited to looking to that driver and his or her insurance policy for compensation for your injuries. Lyft’s insurance policy is generally only available when the Lyft driver bears responsibility for an accident that injures someone and the driver’s own insurance is insufficient to compensate the injured person. However, if your Lyft driver is partially responsible for the accident, you might be able to access Lyft’s insurance coverage.
