Erie Lawyer Talks About Soldiers’ Legal Rights
On November 12, 2015, Tim George was a guest speaker before the American Inn of Courts in Warren, Pennsylvania, where he spoke to a group of lawyers and judges about the Service Member Civil Relief Act (SCRA).
The SCRA is a federal law which provides a variety of legal protections to citizen soldiers who are called to active duty in service of our country. Several of the basic SCRA protections include a stay of legal proceedings, preventing and/or opening default judgments, suspension of the statute of limitations, a 6% cap on interest, lease terminations, eviction protection, taxation provisions, and voting rights.
Tim, a veteran who deployed to Iraq in 2009 with the 28th ID Combat Aviation Brigade, talked to the group of lawyers and judges from Warren, McKean, and Jefferson counties about the SCRA and why it helps not only service members, but all of us.
If you or someone in your family is called to active duty and has questions about what protections the SCRA provides, contact the judge advocate in your unit or call us. We would be happy to help.
