March 26, 2011, ERIE, PA — Highway fatalities in Pennsylvania rose in 2010 after several years of steady decline. AAA Mid-Atlantic reported that there were 1,324 fatalities in 2010, 64 more than in 2009, an increase of 5.4 percent.
Factors contributing to the increase include increased volume of drivers associated with the nation’s economic rebound and increased risky behavior, particularly among teen drivers. The report indicated that the number of people who died while not wearing seatbelts increased 16 percent and deaths involving 16 and 17-year old drivers increased more than 40 percent.
As Erie lawyers representing people in Northwest Pennsylvania who’ve lost loved ones in car accidents and other tragic events, we know the devastation, confusion and loss that a family suffers. We encourage all who will listen to wear their seatbelts and avoid risky behaviors like texting while driving.
