The accident happened near 7:30 pm on August 30. The motorcyclist was east bound on 38th Street nearing Nancy Drive in Erie. A female passenger was with him on the motorcycle. A blue Dodge Durango was westbound in the passing lane on East 38th Street. The Durango made a left turn to travel south on Nancy Drive in front of the motorcycle which was unable to stop and collided with the rear of the Dodge.
The woman on the motorcycle was thrown from the motorcycle and killed. The male motorcycle operator was injured and taken to Hamot. The man was apparently conscious but no other information about his condition was available. Reportedly, neither motorcycle occupant was wearing a helmet.
The driver of the Dodge was not injured but was taken into custody for blood alcohol testing. The man reportedly admitted consuming alcohol and appeared intoxicated.
This fatality is the 12th fatality from an Erie County motorcycle accident this year. So far this year we’ve had 3 times more Pennsylvania motorcycle fatalities than we had all of last year.
Our sympathies are with the grieving family and our hopes with the man who operated the motorcycle that his injuries are not severe. From the report, it sounds like there was nothing the motorcycle operator could have done to avoid the accident.
