July 15, 2011, ERIE, PA — There was a time in my life when, by mid-July, I’d have an established handicap and already played in about a dozen tournaments. Not that I was ever a good golfer. I wasn’t. But I was an enthusiastic golfer and certainly always happy to take the afternoon off.
Kids changed all that. Now, I rarely get out on the course and, when I do, it’s with the kids down at J.C. Martin for a slow but fun nine holes. But today marks the beginning of a stretch of charity tournaments. At the urging of our newest employee, Mark Harrington , Tim and I committed to get out into the community more often. Specifically, we agreed to golf more during the summer in tournaments. So, today we’ll be golfing in the Our Lady of Peace tournament at Whispering Woods Golf Club . Next on the list is The Early Connections tournament at Lakeview on July 25. After that….well, after that we kind of ran out of steam. We won’t be in any other charity tournaments until we get to our major commitment of the summer, the New Blossoms New Life Tournament . Still, three tournaments in a summer is something of a victory for the workaholics at Purchase, George & Murphey, P.C..
So, back to day’s tournament. Today will be the first time I’ve golfed with an adult this summer. Joining me will be Tim George, Mark Harrington (surprised that the guy who had the idea to golf more has somehow made his way on the team?) and trusted friend and advisor, Mike Bishop . It’s a scramble and, honestly, we don’t figure to contend for anything. But it ought to be a hoot and I’m looking forward to it.
