April 10, 2012, ERIE, PA — As Pennsylvania injury lawyers who headquarter our practice in northwest Pennsylvania, the annual Law Day celebration in Erie is an important date on our calendar. This year, the annual Law Day luncheon will be held May 4 at the Bayfront Convention Center and we are happy to share details of the event with you.
The program is titled “Picking Cotton” and the featured speakers are a man wrongly convicted of rape but later cleared by DNA evidence and the woman whose false testimony caused to him to spend 11 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
Ronald Cotton was identified by police as a suspect in Jennifer Thompson’s rape and his photo was shown to Ms. Thompson, who picked him as the man who’d committed the crime. She testified against him at trial, identifying him as her assailant, and he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Eleven years later, DNA evidence proved he was not the man who’d committed the crime and he was released from prison.
Ms. Thompson reached out to him to apologize and the two began an unlikely relationship as friends, authors and speakers who travel the country telling their story of witness error, the justice system and forgiveness.
