September 22, 2010, Erie, PA — Yesterday a summit meeting of Obama administration officials and safety advocates met to further encourage laws designed to eliminate distracted driving. Officials suggested that increasingly tough laws regarding texting and cell phone use, a focus on enforcement and personal responsibility are keys to eliminating distracted driving.
The administration cited progress it has made already. 30 states and the District of Columbia have passed laws prohibiting texting while driving and 8 have passed laws prohibiting the use of hand held phones. While those efforts have made an impact, still there were over 5,500 car accident deaths related to distracted driving last year.
We know that distracted driving plays a role in many Erie County car crashes. We’ve written on the subject here on prior occasions, including an article on the three components of distracted driving; the Pew Research Center Report on Adults and Cell Phone Distractions ; and our blog entry discussing how texting while driving is NOT just a teen thing.
